As dawn broke 99 years ago today, on 25th April 1915, the Allied and ANZAC forces landed at North Beach on the Gallipoli Peninsula.  70% of the Allied troops in the first landings would become casualties.  The Ottoman 57th Regiment fought to the last man in the hope of gaining enough time for replacements to arrive.  The campaign was ended after 8 months of bitter fighting when the last Allied forces withdrew on 20th December 1915.  More than 113,000 men of all sides were killed in battle or died of disease, 231,000 were wounded and 19,000 taken prisoner.
